“Design is a good idea” – Emigre

Design, perhaps, is both the most important and the most difficult step of any creation. I will try to elaborate my statement in this entry by quoting lots of quotes on design. Most of the quotes were taken from the following two sites: designwashere and designwebmash.

Everything is designed. Few things are designed well – Brian Reed. This is a fact, design is everywhere but good design is hard to achieve. It is hard to achieve because, quoting Robin Mathew, Design is where science and art break even. Indeed, this is probably because the whole point of design is to make something that can serve a purpose well. In the end, Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purposeCharles Eames. In order to attempt to serve this purpose, one should first understand the science behind it and science goes along with intelligence or, in other words, knowledge and wisdom. Otherwise, it would be hard to make something to work. But there is also the aesthetics side of it so there is also creativity involved. One might ask why would we even bother with the aesthetics? Because it’s more consumer friendly, as Henrik Fiskar said, If design isn’t profitable, then it’s art.

But design doesn’t stop at the disciplines of science and beautiful art. It also requires the connection with people – public relations that is, because Designing a product is designing a relationship. – Steve Rogers. As mentioned, the whole point of designing something is for someone else to use it: A design isn’t finished until somebody is using it.” – Brenda Laurel.  Therefore it is important or even essential to understand that someone because People ignore design that ignores people – Frank Chimero.  But it also necessary to keep the design from being to generic or abstract. The design should aim at serving a particular purpose for a particular group of people: No design works unless it embodies ideas that are held common by the people for whom the object is intended – Adrian Forty. The reason being it’s impossible to put everything within a limited scope, as Leisa Reichelt advised Don’t design for everyone. It’s impossible. All you end up doing is designing something that makes everyone unhappy.

A good design is insurance for everything good to come. Firstly, “Good design is good business – Thomas J. Watson Jr. Secondly, Many things difficult to design prove easy to perform – Samuel Johnson. But besides the monetary and functionality benefits, good design has a much more profound implication on our lives: Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future – Robert L. Peters. Design defines better ways of living, makes important changes in societies and stirs developments and trends in right directions.

So design is the most important and the most difficult step of any creation. In fact, it should also always be the first step.
